Becoming a school photographer can be a rewarding and enjoyable career if you can make a name for yourself. Your main object as a school photographer would be to either take an individual portrait of a student or a group shot of the school and its pupils.
Before considering a job in this field it would be wise to gain some experience and knowledge on how you can take the best kind of photographs. Going to a Photography school or doing a Photography course would be a wise choice as it would add to your skills and help you stand out from the crowd.
Whilst studying on a photography course you would learn all the inside and out of photography, you would also learn about the maths and science involved in photography. On a course you would generally be expected to have access to dark rooms, digital slr and compact cameras and also traditional film cameras. Starting a course you will usually begin with developing your technical, learning and research skills and probably be set a series of projects letting you make approaches into the development of the photographic process.
Once you have passed this stage you will be encouraged to develop your own style and approach to photography. You should focus on figuring out your own creative potential by undergoing a self-chosen project.
It would also help to apprentice under a good professional school photographer, it’s not unusual to get no financial return when starting out but the knowledge gained would be priceless. If you managed to apprentice under a really good, well known photographer they might also teach you their secrets to success.
